Ice Cream in Finlan-d
"Kesä" means "summer" in Finnish. A-nd "jäätelö" means "ice cream". Finlan-d is one of the biggest consumers of ice cream in Europe, although summers in Finla-nd are short. In Finla-nd, the first ice cream experiments were carried out in the early 1900s. A-nd an Italian Magi family who was the first ice cream manufacturer opened Helsingin jäätelötehdas (the oldest ice cream manufacturer in Finla-nd) in 1922 a-nd Suomen Eskimo Oy. Then other manufacturers soon spawned, like Pietarsaaren jäätelötehdas (1928-2002). The first ice cream bar in Finla-nd opened at the Lasipalatsi in 1936, a-nd at the same time another manufacturer, Maanviljelijäin Maitokeskus started their production. Today, the two largest ice cream manufacturers are Ingman a-nd Nestlé (who bought Valiojäätelö).
